On Jan. 22, 2008 supporters gathered at the state capitol in Atlanta to show their support for life in the debate of life vs. abortion. Tuesday, Jan. 22 marked the 35 year anniversary of the passing of Roe vs. Wade, which legalized abortion in the United States.

Dan Becker, president of Georgia Right to Life, was in attendance at the capitol. "As of midnight January 23, 2008 the 50,000,000 baby will be aborted in the United States," said Becker.

Archbishop Wilton Gregory, also in attendance, put it another way saying, "We have allowed our country to sanction the slaughter 1/6th of our people."

Mike Huckabee, republican presidential nominee candidate, also spoke at the event.

"The right to life should be one of those irrevocable rights to which every human being is entitled," said Huckabee.

"What makes us think that it is okay to expend the life of our children because they might represent an inconvenience to us?"

Approximately 1200 people were in attendance of the rally. The protestors marched around the block holding signs and banners while remaining in silence.
There was no age limitation at the rally as the crowd ranged from infant to grandparent.

Joseph Lavelle, advisor for the Students for Life club at Gainesville State college had these thoughts about abortion.

"There is inconsistency in our judicial system. For example, abortion is legal. If a female wants to have an abortion, that's her choice.

But there have been several recent court cases, such as the Laci Peterson case, where the woman and her child has been murdered and the perpetrator is charged with the murder of the woman and the fetus.

That is an inconsistency in the law."

Lavelle's thoughts are reflected in his role as club advisor.

"The main thing for this club is for students to learn and to learn how to educate others."

"Our club mission is anti-abortion. We feel that abortion is wrong legally and morally," Lavelle went on to mention.

Lavelle also said he had hopes of opening up a crisis line on campus for those considering abortion.
