As the old saying goes, one man's junk is another man's treasure.
Among the Christmas presents students received this year were new cell phones. The only problem now is how to dispose of the old ones. Besides attempting to bury them in the backyard, resell them or even worse, throwing them away in a trash bag, students can donate their old cell phones and receive a tax deduction. Tax season is right around the corner and that makes it an even greater opportunity to donate.
Through the online company of CollectiveGood.com, people can donate any model of cell phones, pagers or other personal device assistant's such as Palm Pilots. The phones are recycled, reused and sold at a cheaper and affordable rate to lesser privileged families in the third world countries whom otherwise aren't able to afford expensive new cell phones.
CollectiveGood allows the proceeds of any of the donators sold cell phones to go to any of the hundreds of state and national charities and organizations that are partnered with the company. Make-A-Wish foundation, Humane Society and the Red Cross are just a few of the many organizations that donation proceeds can be donated to with the cell phones that are sent into CollectiveGood to be recycled.
The donation process is very fast and simple. Visit the CollectiveGood website and choose the organization you wish to send the proceeds to from the eventual sales of your old cell phones. After filling out information such as your name and address to receive tax credit, the paper sheet is printed out and attached inside the box with the cell phones.
Many of the organizations participating also provide free shipping for donators in the form of online postal tags that can be printed and placed onto packages before being mailed.
According to the company, it takes anywhere from 10 to 12 weeks for them to send back a donation acknowledgement letter back to people. That's just enough time for the coming tax season in April.
It's also wise to remember to completely delete all personal information such as phone numbers or text messages that may still linger in the old cell phones.
CollectiveGood also double checks that all information is erased from donated cell phones to reassure people that all private data has been cleared before it is reused by someone else.
