Besides being considered "one of the best art organizations in the state" by the Georgia Council for the Arts, the Gainesville Theatre Alliance has a new milestone to celebrate. This year, GTA celebrates its 30th season of bringing the culture of theater to the Gainesville community.
According to Larry Cook, assistant professor of theater, "the musical is the biggest production of the year" and for the 30th anniversary they've made it even bigger. This year's musical is "The Wedding Singer," a popular romantic comedy, now available as an on-stage experience. During the first weekend of performances, GTA is hosting a special showing for alumni of the Alliance.
In addition to "The Wedding Singer," this season will include showings of "The Beaux Stratagem," "Eurydice" and, courtesy of Wonderquest (GTA for Young Audiences), "Robin Hood."
The Gainesville Theatre Alliance's mission is to use "the community showcase" and interaction through "innovative outreach" to fulfill their "quest for excellence" and "education through collaboration." The collaboration between GSC, Brenau University, Theatre Wings and The Professional Company has earned GTA acclaim both in the Northeast Georgia community and nationwide.
The collaborative road has not always been a wrinkle-free one, though. "There are some challenges," says Cook, "but the administrations of Brenau and Gainesville State work together to regulate them." He goes on to say "the administration values the combination [of the two colleges] and realizes that we've accomplished things together that we couldn't have alone."
GSC's Theater Department is not only excited for the 30th anniversary, but also the inauguration of the bachelor's of fine arts in design and technology for theatre this year.
Due to financial considerations for the addition to the degrees offered at GSC, the 30th anniversary line-up has been scaled back. "For the 50th anniversary we'll do more," admits Cook. In spite of the budget restraints, Cook says the Alliance still might have a small celebration for themselves after the production. For all of their work, they deserve it.
Showtimes:
"Robin Hood" : Oct. 1-9, 2009 @ Brenau University's Pearce Auditorium
"The Wedding Singer" : Nov. 10-21, 2009 @ Brenau University's Hosch Theatre
"The Beaux Stratagem" : Feb. 9-20, 2010 @ Brenau University's Hosch Theatre
"Eurydice" : April 13-24, 2010 @ GSC's Ed Cabell Theatre
