This year's film selection is the romantic dramedy, "The Ramen Girl."
"It's about a girl who gets stranded in Tokyo, and so, she decides to become a ramen cook," said Jeanne White, adviser to Japan Club. "It shows a lot of the culture and the misunderstandings."
In addition to the showing of the film, the Asian Film Festival will offer food from Wasabi Restaurant. The authentic menu includes a traditional array of vegetarian sushi and vegetable fried rice. Japan Club "wanted to be sure it's genuine Japanese food," so they haven't held back on the expenses. The upcoming trip to Japan Fest and the Asian Film Festival has taken up about half of the club's budget.
White said that Japan Club's intent for the Asian Film Festival is to "introduce and make people familiar with Japanese culture through food and movies…not only traditional, but modern Japanese culture as well."
Students attending the film festival can claim co-curricular credit. Aside from the academic and gastric benefits, those simply wanting to experience Asian culture will benefit from showing up to the Asian Film Festival.
The event takes place at noon on Monday, Sept. 21 in the Robinson Ballroom, located in the Student Center.
"Everybody in the whole school is invited," said White.
