Not only are Phi Theta Kappa members smart, they are generous as well.

As Haiti struggles in the aftermath of a devastating earthquake, PTK club president, David Spencer, put together a fundraiser for relief efforts.

"The Oakwood Wal-Mart across the street from Gainesville State College became a place of hope and inspiration," Ray-Lynn Snowden said, adviser for the Gainesville Rho Mu Chapter of PTK.

Faculty advisers, PTK club members and volunteers from GSC's student body recently gave up their Saturday to collect relief money from Wal-Mart shoppers.

Those who donated money were offered a glazed donut as a token of appreciation.

Through the generosity of Francisco Moreno, general manager of the Krispy Kreme on Buford Drive, 45 dozen donuts were provided for the cause.

An extra 10 dozen donuts were needed when the initial batch of donuts ran out according to Snowden.

By 4 p.m. all 660 donuts were gone.

The temperature on Saturday was barely above freezing and sleet fell throughout the day. However, volunteers persevered and managed to raise a staggering $1,633.40.

"Perhaps the best place to start is with thanks," Spencer said.

A thanks to the people who braved the weather Saturday to volunteer their time, and the advisers who put their lives on hold to lead us. And, a big thanks to the community that supported us."

Money raised will go to the American Red Cross Haiti Relief fund.
